The Periurban Initiative is an open network of researchers, policymakers, bloggers and community activists interested in understanding the dynamics of change outside the borders of cities in the 21st century. Its mission is to use this understanding to develop interventions for sustainability, i.e., build economic prosperity equitably, maintain environmental integrity, and strengthen social solidarity.

DEVELOPMENT
The Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS) is a centre for research, scholarship and academic exchange located at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM). Born out of an ongoing effort to strengthen Indo-German ties and to bring together German and Indian researchers for furthering exchange of ideas and increased platforms for dialogue, it was launched in 2010 to promote sustainable development in Germany, India and South Asia.

RESEARCH
Currently, research is being carried out on issues such as periurban development, designing sustainable waste management as well as air-quality and water-resource management systems for the city of Chennai in the changing context of climate change.
